SPORTS – BOOMERANG – GAMES – COMPETITIONS

It has always been fun to throw a boomerang into the sky and catch it on its return flight to the thrower. There are many simple games that have evolved over the years.

  1. Trick Catches: Throw the boomerang and try to catch it with one hand, two hands, under your leg or even behind your back.

  2. Score Catching: You go on throwing and catching till you drop.

  3. Accuracy: Throw the boomerang. Stay in the same position without moving your feet and catch the return. If you get as many returns to the same spot for you to catch without any movement of the feet, you are accurate.

In addition to these there are Aussie Rag, Relay race, juggling etc., in boomerang games. But, major boomerang competitions center around:

v     Individual Events

v     Team Events

v     Exhibition Games

Individual Events:

Accuracy: Same as item 3 above.

Trick catch: Same as item 1 above.

Fast catch: You are allowed 5 throws. If you are the fastest catcher, you win.

Endurance: This is to test your limit of endurance. If you do fast catch for a continuous five minutes without dropping, you win.

MTA – Maximum Time Aloft: A finely tuned boomerang especially made for MTA is used. The test here is how long you can make your boomerang float in the air before it returns to you.

Australian Round: Accuracy, catching and distance are combined in this test. For accuracy and catching, a catch in the bulls eye get you the maximum. For distance, if your boomerang reaches 50 meters you get the maximum.

Team Events:

q       Team Relay: A bulls eye is painted in the ground. From your position, which is away from the bulls eye, you have to run to the bulls eye, throw your boomerang and then run back and catch it.

q       Team Endurance Relay: Run to the bulls eye, throw and catch your return boomerang for a minute and then run back to your original position.

q       Team Super Catch: Of the 4 teammates, No.1 throws and MTA boomerang. Immediately other team members No.2, No.3, No.4, throw fast catch boomerangs. This goes on till the MTA returns to No.1 and is caught by him. The number of catches held from the time the MTA went high, floated, returned and caught is your team’s score.

q       Team Position: Each teammate gets 2 throws i.e., 4*2=8 throws. Throw, catch, throw the next round from the position where the first was caught – this way complete the eight throws. The team that gets the nearest to the bulls eye wins.

Other games we have seen in Individual events like accuracy, trick catch, MTA and Australian Round are played by teams in the same format.

Exhibition Games:

The distance that your boomerang reaches before it returns to you is the criterion for this event.
